How are banks that are exchanging images providing the actual checks to their customers who have requested to receive their original items back?

Answer:

In most cases, these banks will not be able to provide the actual checks. They will either have to convince their customers they can survive very nicely with images of their checks, or, if they cave in to customer demand, the best they can offer is a substitute check.
