Clearing the Credit Report Since It Finally Paid

Answered by:

Question:
I have a very irate customer, upset that he has a bad credit report because he was a co-signer and/or co-maker on five separate loans. While he did not come in and keep the loans current when getting his past due notices, he did eventually pay all of these loans off, some after they had to be charged off. Can I clear up his credit report for him?
Answer:

I would resist temptation. You reported it as they paid it, or didn't as the case may be. If you remove the entry another lender may well make a loan they wouldn't otherwise do.

Instead, tell them they can add a comment to their report and explain that they were a cosigner and they did repay the debt. That compromise may be enough. But I believe you either have to report it as it was or delete the record. The latter serves only the borrower.
