Closing unprofitable accounts

Question:
Our bank had a big promotion for “free” accounts with a minimum opening deposit of $25. Some customers never deposited any further funds and the cost of maintaining these piddly things is high. Are we stuck?
Answer:

No. These customers didn’t get a golden ticket. They just got a “free ride” for a while. I would be concerned if they just opened the account a few months ago, because understandably they could argue that you never informed them that if there wasn’t a particular level of deposits or activity that you would close the account. Encourage them to make deposits and use the account. Bide your time for a while before taking action. But you aren’t stuck for life.
