Death of SS Recipient - Check Return Rules

Answered by:

Question:
What is the rule on returning checks when a Social Security recipient dies?
Answer:

The rules can be boiled down to this, when discussing a paper check payment of SSA benefits: If the payee dies before negotiating the check, the check should be returned to the SSA. The SSA will determine whether the check should be reissued and to whom. The check should not be negotiated by a representative of the payee's estate. If the check is endorsed by the estate or by anyone else the Treasury will attempt a reclamation (see 31 CFR 240.15(a)(2)).
