Depositing Checks From A Minor Into The Guardian's Account

Answered by:

Question:
A customer presented a US Treasury check (tax refund check) payable to her minor child. The mother wanted toendorse and deposit the item into her account. In this type of situation, is it o.k. to perform this transaction? Are there any repercussions?
Answer:

The endorsement of the check should reflect the mother's name as parent and natural guardian of the child - and should say "Jane Doe, parent and natual guardian of John Doe", and then she should endorse it again, "Jane Doe"(good idea to include the account number too) underneath where she signed is as parent. Two endorsements.
