Does each teller window need the FDIC sign?

Question:
Is it a requirment that each teller window have a FDIC sign, including each drive thru?

Answer by Jim Bedsole:
Here's what the FDIC regulation (328.2(a)) says: "Each insured bank shall continuously display an official bank sign or an official savings association sign at each station or window where insured deposits are usually and normally received in its pricipal place of business and in all its branches, except on automatic service facilities including automatic teller machines, cash dispensing machines, pointofsale terminals, and other electronic facilities where deposits are received." The official signs required here have a specified color and size. The reg goes on to say that additional bank signs or savings association signs can be displayed in other locations within the bank in other sizes, colors or materials. But this is in addition to, not in lieu of, the official signs requirement. I have seen some interpretation (but can't put my finger on it) that says that a single official sign could be placed between two adjacent teller windows and cover both stations with one sign. My interpretation is that you should also have the official sign in each drivethru window, but need not have it on each tube machine at additional drive thru lanes (although there's nothing wrong with having them there).

A key word here also is "official" sign. Often a miniture reproduction is on a sign that also says "Teller Open", "Teller Closed" or has the teller's name. The official sign is 7x3 inches.

If your drive up teller's window cannot be seen from the vehicle, it is recommended that the official sign be posted there as well.

The official bank sign is 7" x 3" with black letters on gold background. The official savings association sign is a circle 5 1/8" in diameter with black letters, stars and eagle on a gold background.Savings associations must use the savings association sign. Banks may use either sign.
