Does IRS Levy Exempt Social Security Benefits?

Answered by:

Question:
Does an IRS levy exempt Social Security benefits, Social Security disability benefits, V.A. benefits etc?
Answer:

Such benefits may be protected, but it is up to the taxpayer, not the bank, to assert the protections against the IRS. The federal regulation protecting federal benefit payments from state garnishment orders does not apply to IRS levies.
