EIN & SSN - Same Number?

Answered by:

Question:
Is it possible to have the same EIN and SSN? I researched irs.gov and could not find anything that addresses this. We have a customer with a SSN and an estate account with the same EIN.
Answer:

Although the IRS has said that social security numbers and EINs won't overlap, I have personally seen that it can happen. However, the likelihood that an estate and a living customer will have the same sequence of digits in their respective EIN and SSN and have accounts in the same bank is so remote that it's sure to be wrong. A lot of people think that you can use an SSN for an estate account. That is under no circumstances true and messing with the hyphenation of the digits doesn't eliminate the problem. I'm almost certain that if you ask the individual and the estate to provide documentation from the SSA and the IRS concerning those numbers, you'll find that one of them is wrong.
