Interns

Question:
I was wondering how other banks handle criminal background checks for interns. For new hires, we fingerprint them and submit them through the ABA / FBI program, but by the time I get the clearance back, the interns are usually gone. Any opinions or advise would be greatly appreciated.
Answer:

The good news: you're already doing more in the way of background checks on new hires than most of the financial institutions in this country.

The bad news: temporary "insiders" and janitors are two types of opportunists who take advantage of any "holes" in your security procedures. If you think that temporary agencies and janitorial firms conduct comprehensive background investigations on their applicants, please think again.

I suggest that you hire a local private investigator to conduct at least local background investigations on these two groups. You should get the results within forty-eight hours at a minimal cost per check.
