IRS Requesting a Copy of a CTR

Answered by:

Question:
Does the Internal Revenue Service have the right to request a copy of a CTR without a subpoena or other written authorization?
Answer:

The CTR was supposed to have been filed with the IRS in the first place. There is nothing on the CTR that the IRS should not have. You don't need a legal document to compel production of the copy, as long as that is all that is requested. I do think you should, however, verify that you are dealing with an IRS agent before providing the information. Check the agent's identification or the telephone number provided.
