Is an LEI the same as a charter number?

Question:
What is a Legal Entity Identifier on my beneficial ownership form?
Answer:

A legal entity identifier is issued under an international numbering system. Your financial institution may have one itself for some of your loan regulations. But it is not a charter number. It is an optional field on the beneficial ownership certification form and should be left blank if the customer does not have one. Do not use it for charter numbers, NAICS or any other type of numbers you may obtain.
