Managing ACH Risk

Question:
Can we allow our business customer to decide which Standard Entry Class Code (SEC) to use when processing ACH?
Answer:

With so many payment options available in the ACH Network, one might think it would be best to offer clients unlimited use, but some SECs are not for customer use; they are strictly for financial institutions. Others might prove inappropriate for the business activity and intent of the ACH transaction. The bank should prescribe available options to the customer based on the customer’s business model, what they are processing, the intended recipient, and the bank’s own risk appetite. Remember that in the ACH Network, the customer’s bank is responsible for what they do (or don’t do), so choose wisely!
