ODP - Length of Time for Charge Off Accounts

Answered by:

Question:
We are currently working on an ODP Policy and Procedures. It was stated that an account should be charged off no later than 60 days. We do our charge offs monthly. Do we have to change our method or can we charge them off the last day of the month even if it passes 60 days?
Answer:

The joint guidance on overdraft protection programs indicates the following: "In addition, overdraft balances should generally be charged off when considered uncollectible, but no later than 60 days from the date first overdrawn."

What you are suggesting would extend this up to a period of 89 days. I think you might expose yourself to criticism, depending on your examiner.
