Origin of the Term Cash Letter

Answered by:

Question:
What is the origin of the term cash letter?
Answer:

It reverts back to the old days when a bank would create a totaled list of checks they negotiated for a neighboring bank and would go to that bank and physically present the checks and the list and that bank would hand them cold hard cash for the checks. Hence it was known as a "cash" letter.
