Passing Bait

Answered by:

Question:
I recently attended a training session where the security officer stated in the context of “do what the robber asks”, if they tell you “no bait," don’t give them bait. While not mentioned in the training, I’d imagine the same rule holds true for this security officer regarding GPS devices. My question is, why not give it to them anyway? Especially bait. How is the robber to know?
Answer:

Every time you attend training you will note discrepancies between what one person teaches versus another. This question is a good example of the difference in trainers. If you attended a program taught by law enforcement, many times you will be told to include the bait money or the GPS, no matter the demand. The reasoning behind that is when criminals go to jail, they are essentially being sent to a college for robbery techniques. Almost every thief who has served time in jail knows to demand money with a note instructing the teller to “ give me the money with no tracker or bait money.” By advising you not to give it at all, the trainer is avoiding liability if someone gets hurt in the robbery.

I always believe it is a judgement call on what you do. If the teller is afraid of this robber, forget handing over the bait or GPS. If the teller isn’t afraid, based on many different factors, allow them to hand it out. The biggest point I like to make when training staff is that the robber is more likely to be caught if you give them the GPS pack. If you catch them, they won’t be back!
