Personal vs. business account stop payment rules

Answered by:

Question:
Are the stop payment rules different for business accounts than they are for consumer accounts?
Answer:

Under the Uniform Commercial Code, they are the same. Under Regulation E there is clearly a difference, since business accounts aren’t covered by the regulation at all. And under NACHA rules, there are some differences in the period during which a stop order remains effective. NACHA also allows a financial institution to impose a requirement that a consumer’s stop order on a recurring ACH debit be received up to three business days before the debit is scheduled to post.
