Putting "See ID" on back of card

Is it necessary to sign the back of debit card? We have a couple of employees who have written 'see id' on the back of theirs. I was just sure that I had read somewhere that the cards should be signed, but of course, I can't find it now.
Answer: 

As lunatic as it seems, at least one of the major card associations has in its rules a requirement that, if a merchant is presented a card with no signature, the merchant should require the customer to sign the card before accepting it. Nothing about checking another ID.
