Retention: Surveillance Tapes of Teller & Customer

Answered by:

Question:
How long do banks have to keep surveillance tapes of the teller and customer?
Answer:

I don't know of a prescribed requirement. Many institutions want to keep them for some reasonable time after statements are generated, in case there are claims made. Assume your statements are generated monthly. Allowing 30 days from the transaction date will take you to statement production. Adding another 30 days allows the customer time to review their statement. You may have to determine how long you allow for them to do this, for this part of the equation. And you may add a few weeks or even months to allow yourself a buffer. Part of this is determined by your media and how much storage capacity you have, in addition to how often you have needed this.
