Saturday Safe Deposit Box Access

Answered by:

Question:
Our bank has decided to close our lobby on Saturdays and only use the drive-thru for business. If a customer needs access to their safe deposit box on Saturday, can we post a sign that says "Safe Deposit Box Access by appointment only on Saturday" and allow them access to the secured building?
Answer:

It would be unwise to permit Saturday access for safe deposit entry unless you have the staff to support the function. Consider that safe deposit access will require a staff member to obtain an access signature and verify authority, accompany the individual to the safe deposit vault, and then readmit that person to the vault to return the box. That takes an individual away from other duties (such as waiting on that drive-up window, where customers often can't see that you're busy doing something else, and can tend to get impatient).

There's also the problem of security. If the safe deposit customer is actually two individuals and your staff level is two, are the numbers really adequate to provide security for you and the branch.

Most banks won't allow safe deposit access after lobby hours during the week (assuming the drive-up closes later). When staff levels are probably even lower on a Saturday, allowing access is too problematic, in my opinion.
