Stop Elderly Customer From Withdrawing Money?

Answered by:

Question:
Can we stop an elderly customer from withdrawing all of their money to send to a Prize Scam? We have police, attorney and family involved. No-one can convince her she is not getting $3.2 million for $65,000.
Answer:

Unless a court declares your customer legally incompetent and names a guardian, you can only continue your warnings about such scams, but you can't prevent the withdrawals. The customer has rights, after all, and one of them is to do what she wants with her money, even if it's ill-advised.

I assume you've already notified the local elder protective services office, or your state's equivalent. Beyond that, there's not much you can do, other than unilaterally closing the customer's accounts, recognizing that won't accomplish much beyond making the whole sorry mess another bank's problem.
