Styling for Business w/Customers Name in Title

Answered by:

Question:
What is the correct styling for a business account that has the customers full name in the title? For example, John Smith, Attorney at Law...can the account be styled "John Smith, Attorney at Law" or does it need to be "John Smith, DBA John Smith, Attorney at Law"?
Answer:

"DBA" means "doing business as;" i.e. operating under an assumed name. Your example does not contain an assumed name, only a description of the customer's business. It would be no different than John Doe, lawn mowing.

Whether the customer is an individual or an entity, their name should be listed first in the account title then followed by any DBA name. First, to indicate who the real customer is and second to ease the IRS matching process for information reporting.
