Time Frame for Retaining Paper Checks

Question: 
We currently use the Check 21 system to clear all checks we receive in any one banking day. What is the minimum time we must retain either the paper check or have it available to print as a substitute check?

Answer by Randy Carey: There are no minimum retention times for paper checks. As far as being able to reproduce a copy of the check, you would have to refer to your State's statute of limitations.

Answer by John Burnett: Your bank undoubtedly has operational agreements with its upstream correspondent(s), including the Federal Reserve Bank. Those agreements may include paper check retention requirements for reconstruction of illegible images or other image-related problems.
