Timeliness of ACH stop payment

Answered by:

Question:
If a customer requests a stop payment on an ACH debit (on the day of presentment), are we required to honor their request? Or since they've indicated they've revoked authorization, should we ask them to complete the WSUD instead?
Answer:

Take the easier of the approaches that are available to you. If there’s time to return the item for stop payment (this would fall under the normal ACH return deadline), go with the stop payment. If the consumer has truly revoked the authorization, and it’s too late to meet your return deadline for a stop payment, you can use the WSUD and return the entry as unauthorized (extended return deadline). The stop payment would be valid for any future debits if authorization has been revoked. Note that the WSUD and extended return deadline may only be available for consumer accounts (depends on the actual Entry Class of the debit).
