Web Site Currency Rate Listing Requirements

Answered by:

Question:
What is the rule for a bank web site to list currency rates? Should there be a disclaimer added on the page or can it be contained in a privacy statement elsewhere on the site?
Answer:

I recommend that any posting of currency rates be accompanied by a disclaimer that indicates the rates are meant to be strictly informational, are based on information obtained from outside parties, subject to change at all times, and not binding on the bank.

You do not want to have someone claim you had posted a conversion rate of .85 on Canadian dollars because some ham-handed typist did the update one day.

I would definitely not tuck this disclaimer away in your privacy statement on the Web site. Keep Privacy by itself. Disclaimers belong where people can see them, if not in bold "up side the head" print!
