An Intensive Approach to Workplace Violence Issues for Bank

Almost daily, it seems, there are reports of violence -- at the workplace, in schools, in shopping malls. Study after study confirms that workplace violence is a leading cause of death in the workplace. Every employee, therefore, has a vital stake and interest in knowing how to recognize, react to, and deal with workplace violence, whether it is perpetrated by a fellow employee, a relative, a customer or a total stranger walking in off the street.

This webinar will give every employee, not necessarily just Security Managers (although they may benefit from it in particular), concrete and specific strategies for dealing with violence in the workplace, whether perpetrated by one employee on another or by third parties against an employee (such as an estranged spouse, stalker or criminal). You'll get case studies and explanations of employees' legal rights, obligations and protections under OSHA, the National Labor Relations Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, state anti-stalking and workers compensation laws, federal anti-discrimination law (Title VII), medical information protection statutes such as GINA and HIPAA, and the common law (such as liability for "negligent hiring" or supervision), whether those employees are "rank and file," managers, supervisors, HR specialists or the Security Manager (Officer).

As a financial institution's designated Security Manager (Officer), you may have discovered that you have more opportunities to step in organizational mudpies than any other employee. Acts of workplace violence, whether they have internal or external sources, will likely become the events that will be the most costly to you, your employees and your institution. How you prepare for these events -- and how you respond to them -- will affect your institution's image and define your career. The Security Manager isn't just responsible for assessing risks and preventing losses. The Security Manager is also responsible for leading the institution's response to real or potential acts of workplace violence.

Security is always about policies, procedures, practices -- and politics. When a safety-related issue arises, the legal application of appropriate strategies and tactics also applies. Jerry Panaro and Dana Turner have identified many of the most common, most harmful and most costly workplace violence and workplace safety scenarios. They have then prepared the "best-of-all-worlds" tactical responses that are supported by legal precedent and industry-standard business practices. Also included in this presentation are web links to case law, policy statements and training materials.
