Strengths and weaknesses of new check fraud prevention technologies

Question:
What are some of the strengths and weaknesses of the new check fraud prevention technologies?
Answer:

A recently released book, Surfing Payment Channels Mastering the Fraud Tsunami, produced by financial services executive and payments expert, James D. Pitts states the following: A number of technologies have advanced significantly over the past two years that can help the check fraud prevention effort. These include analytic engines, image analysis, and deposit fraud integration. Each component on its own has strengths and weaknesses.

  • New analytic engines can now better filter suspects to a more manageable level, but fraud investigators still require the check image for the final decision.
  • Improved image analysis brings amazing accuracy to automated signature authentication and counterfeit detection. Additionally, certain vendors can successfully process IRDs, RCCs, and PADs seamlessly. Unfortunately, image-only approaches cannot detect all forms of fraud.
