Email Retention Guidelines

Answered by:

Question:
Email Retention. Is there any print out documentation that shows or explains how long should emails be saved? We have changed our email policy twice and our retention level is currently 60 days. If we have a legal problem can we be in trouble?
Answer:

Email is discoverable in court. You should follow the same retention guidelines for email as you would snail mail. The exceptions are messages subject to separate SEC rules.

Your 60-day period is too limiting for complaints dealing with loan activities, which require CRA review and retention. Similarly, they may be too long for the message asking about a contact address or your hours.
