Audio Capability Requirement on All ATMs Probable

The Architectural Access Board of the federal government is considering a recommendation that will require that all ATMs gradually be made audio capable. The Board, which is responsible for issuing guidelines for the American Disabilities Act is expected to vote in favor of that measure in August. It will then go on to the U.S. Department of Justice for final consideration before the end of 2001.

Industry watchers say the requirement would probably not require any particular audio-enabling technology. That choice and development would most likely be left to those companies expert in the technology. Organizations for the sight-impaired and for the blind have been pressuring lawmakers for ATMs with audio capability for some years.
