Bank Security Requirements

Answered by:

Question:
Other than the Bank Protection Act, are there any other regulations that govern physical vaults and their specific construction requirements? For example, are there specifics regarding burn time, sprinkler protection, etc. that apply to banks and savings associations outside of the rather broad requirements of the BPA?
Answer:

Underwriters Laboratories examines vault components, safes, alarms, bullet-resistant materials and about every security product a financial institution uses. When the position bond is renewed the application normally requests the UL Classification of the vault to establish premium.

As a general rule UL Class 2 are the normal ratings for vaults. This rating means that the vault can be attacked for over one hour by an expert burglar using cutting torches, fluxing rods, portable electric powered tools, hydraulic tools and common hand tools without being compromised.
