Some of the people in my office (we're in Boston) said they felt it, but I didn't.

Yah buncha earthquake rookies. I read the Yahoo news article talkign abotu people pouring out of office buildings as the earthquake was happening....UM, YOU DON'T DO THAT. You don't leave the building until the shakign has stopped and it's determined safe to go outside. Wouldn't want to have shards of glass falling on you from upper stories or stuff outside (liek the swayign lamp posts) falling on your head. Sounds liek the East Coast needs to broaden its disaster training to include "what do to in case of earthquake" That said.... y'all enjoy the ride?

I am in Charlotteseville about 40 minutes west of epicenter and it was definitely shaking our building pretty good. We evacuated for about 15 minutes but are back at work now. It seemed to last about 20 seconds.

I agree. My office chair was shaking in Ohio, everyone thought I was crazy! If they don't think you're crazy normally, you're doing something wrong :)~

Biker Dip - That's funny you say that. First thing I thought about once I returned to office was reviewing our disaster policy! BTW - Looks like evryone here had the sense to wait till it was over before exiting!!

I think I can speak for the east coast metro areas.....they don't sit around for anything any longer after 9/11. Unfortunately, once bitten, twice shy...especially when you don't know what it is that is happenening.

Do you guys all have disaster trainign in your buildings? We do twice a year...sometimes a similated fire and sometimes a simulated earthquake. You can actualyl get fined if you don't participate (or your employer can). Everyones involved...all the building tenants, building managem, ent, engineering, and fire dept.
I think out here it's mandatory but not 100% certain of that.

Some of us eastcosters have earthquakes as part of our d/r. We go outside as our swaying lamp posts have already been stolen. Glass falling from the upper floors is an everyday thing. Not a biggie. Our building are older and our inspectors have been paid off so there is a greater chance that the building will fall. somewhat

Gosh this is 2 earthquakes pretty close together, I believe one hit in Colorado in the last few days!!! There was one in Grand Prairie TX a week or so ago, too. Most people around here just thought that one was due to fracking. Can't speak for CO or DC.

I can understand that for sure. I would be outside as well if I lived in NYC or DC.

We felt it down here in Columbia, SC. Just shook the monitors a bit. Somebody above mentioned the fault line under Beaufort, there was a 7.3 in 1886 that about wiped out Charleston, SC.
Doesn't help that a lot of stuff here in the south is built on SAND - not the most stable foundation.

Yup - that one had me researching fault lines east of the Mississippi. The articles I read indicated that there are several fault lines that we never think about and there are numerous earthquakes each year but because the faults are so deep, they aren't felt very often. The article also stated that earthquakes on our side of the mississippi would be felt over a greater distance. The New Madrid fault is the biggie - will devastate Memphis if it does what it did in the 1800's. There is also a big one under Beaufort SC and all along the SC coast. And considering that our buildings do not have the earthquake precautions here that they do in Cali, etc, if we get a big one, it will most likely do more damage.

Update: Daughters home in Maryland looks like it was ransacked. Glass display cases knocked over and the contents broken, pets freaking out, phone lines cut off so that's all the info for now.

They just built a new dam for the lake that provides water to Columbia, SC. They figured out that if another big one hit here, the original dam would fail and Columbia would be under water.
Well, we survived the earthquake. Now we get to wait and see if Irene comes to visit this weekend.
