I have decided that it is about time that I moved on from my current position and try to find something that I will enjoy more (financially, career-wise, and locale-wise). As a result, I have been checking out some universities and I stumbled upon a great posting at UVM (University of Vermont).

I was wondering if anyone had an experiences working at a University, and what advice / suggestions they have for someone who is moving positions from a small, local bank to a somewhat large university.

Who knows if I will get the job, but I seem to be liking the notion of working in an academic environment.

What type of job are you applying for at the university? There's a huge difference between faculty jobs and administrative jobs on a campus.

I am applying for a staff position. For anonymous reasons, I don't think I can divulge the department I am applying to as I am sure people will figure out who I am.

I hear the politics are brutal in academia. (Of course at many banks they are too.) Good luck to you, though!

I have a friend who works in the financial department of the public schools in my "small" town, and she loves it. However, if it is more of an admin position and you would be dealing with students, that may be different. However, if you applied for the job, it's obviously something that you enjoy. Just take it one day at a time. Good luck!!

I worked at a major university for 6 years. I can't say that it was a bad experience. PM me if you like and we can discuss any particular concerns you might have.

Oops, didn't notice you were anonymous so I guess you can't PM me. Any specific questions you have? It's hard to put it all in a nutshell.

I've never worked in acadamia land, but I understand it's different from business in this way. In business it's all about impressing customers and potential customers. In acadamia, it's all about schools, professors and adminstrators impressing each other.

My ex has worked in a research lab at a major university for 20 + years. Excellent benefits and time off. And they paid for half of my daughters college fees and tuition (at a different school).

In a lot of academia the pressure is to publish. But it can be a good life. Free tuition, nice surroundings, no BSA to deal with. Hmmmm. Now you've got me thinking.
