what is the deluxe edition?
I can't believe that it is already coming. Harry is growing up. They have the three movies on sale at my grocery store. My daughter (who is 5 today) absolutely loves the movies. When is movie 4 coming out?

The exact date is November 18, 2005. You can check out the teaser trailer for the movie already at gobletoffire.com. I have read where some lucky people in Chicago were the first to screen the movie this past week. From their reports, I think it is safe to say that it should be AWESOME!

I’ll admit that I’m ignorant when it comes to Harry Potter books.

What is the appeal?

I really like Stephen King, Robin Cook John Saul etc. and I really enjoyed Tolkien.

Are the Potter books good reads? I was thinking about buying them.

Also, is there and end to them in sight?

There are going to be 7 altogether. Hogwarts is a seven year school, and each book is a year of Harry's life at the school.

I can't stand Harry Potter. IMO he's a second rate Gandalf. What kind of wizard rides a broom anywhy? A real wizard rides a fire breathing dragon or something like that. Wizard?? Try girly boy...

HP and LOTR are apples and oranges. Two totally different worlds created by two wonderfully talented and different authors. Have you even read the stories, Some Guy? They are actually pretty darn entertaining. J.K. Rowling is a very gifted writer. If you had, then you would know the kind of life Harry has had up to this point. You would also know that he hasn't always had the "Fellowship" to help him out when the going gets tough (nothing against the LOTR). Harry is also a kid, give him a break.

Harry has; however, ridden a hippogriff and thestrals and used his Firebolt (his broom) to zoom circles around the fire breathing dragon you are so keen on. You are right in your comparison, Harry is no Gandalf. Like I said…HE’S A KID!! But I bet you a sack of Galleons that Dumbledore could kick his ass any day of the week, hands down.

That aside, we’re all just here to have a good time in anxious anticipation. If you Slytherin want to come and rain on our parade, then we suggest you just stay on the platform when the train pulls into Kings Cross’s Station. Hogwarts won’t miss you, trust me. That is assuming, you can even FIND the platform.

Also wondering: If you were in the Great Hall on your first night at Hogwarts, where would the Sorting Hat place you?

P.S. I wouldn’t let any members of the Order of the Phoenix hear you talking smack about their boy wonder. It would be a shame if one of those ‘Unforgivable Curses’ just happened to slip out of a wand…

The deluxe edition has a different cover, retails for $60.00, has full page drawing by the artist and will be 704 pages as opposed to 682. I think it also have the gold leafing of the pages. I'll probably wind up getting the regular copy too though, for my many re-readings of the book.

Have you heard of the Harry Potter Scene-It game? The DVD based trivia game will feature all four movies and is set to come out in August! So, that means, we'll get GOF clips before the movie release.
Another must have for my HP collection

I like Harry Potter- and all the movies. I love to read too but I am a bit slow on the books- and I don't know why.

Same here! The mailman will be bringing mine on Saturday. I plan to take the phone off the hook, unplug the computer and TV, hide the cellphone, and sit back and relax with HP!

I'm a big Harry Potter fan. Since I can't seem to find time to sit down with the book I always purchase the CD version. Jim Dale is the narrator. I listen to the recording while I'm driving or doing chores around the house. If you haven't heard one of Dale's reading do yourself a favor and borrow, buy or rent one. I can't wait for Saturday! I'm 59 years old and worse than a kid when it comes to Harry Potter!

Yes, I know that Rowling is a wonderful author. No I have never read the books, but I have seen some of the movies. I guess my biggest pet peeve with the little boy flying on a broom stick is the fact that he has no facial hair. If you look at a lot of old Merlin stories, Merlin stated that his beard was a sign of his magic. (The longer the beard the more powerful the magician) And although Gandalf never really discussed it, (I don't believe, but I could be wrong) he too had a long beard (the sign of a powerful wizard)... Then you have this little boy, barely hitting puberty doing magic tricks that are close or maybe even equal to the power shown by Gandalf or Merlin... It just never really worked for me.

this was explained in the second book, Harry has been through extensive electolosis treatments (he also shaves his legs, j/k)

Even in the movies (though it's more clearly stated in the books), there is a consistent thread hinting at the tremendous powers Harry might really have once he matures. So, the underlying purpose of 'all those magic tricks' is to make you wonder, "What will he be able to do when he's an adult?" It's called subtext, you should look into it.

I'm just calling it as I see it,

Merlin: Old, full of wisdom and life experience, extremely powerful, large bushy beard.

Gandalf: Old, full of wisdom and life experience, extremely powerful, large bushy beard

Harry Potter: Young pubescent kid, no beard, little magic stick.

Going round and round
Some Guy - if it makes you feel any better, Dumbledore is the most powerful wizard in the books, and he has a beard that would make Gandalf or Merlin proud.

JK Rowling does not claim Harry is a power wizard...yet. Harry has been gotten by using more luck than power. He is a kid that kids can relate to.

But if you want to compare wizards, I'm betting Dumbledore would give Merlin and Gandalf a good run for their money.

PS. Merlin also used a little magic stick.

And I have nothing against Dumbledore. He has a beard, thus having the true image of a wizard...

I always thought of it as more of a staff, but you can call it as you see it. I guess I could read the books before I bag on HP anymore, but this is just so much fun.

Does anybody dress up for these midnight release things or do you figure that you have to draw the line somewhere?

I don't go to the release things. Midnight is way too late. If I did go, I wouldn't dress up. If I'm gonna wait in a long line, I want to wear something I'm comfortable in. I just wait until a friend reads it, and borrow it, or wait until it's my turn on the waiting list at the library.

Um, I wear my traditional black clothes. I have a shirt that says on the front "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good" on the front, and "mischief managed" on the back.

For OOTP, i wore my Griffindor tank top, fake HP glasses and had a lightning bolt on my forehead, so did my kiddos. It was so much fun!
