I always thought that we were not allowed to keep a copy of the customer's DL in the file...Now I am hearing that we are required to under the USA Patriot Act...Any info would be helpful.

Welcome!

If you search the forum on 'CIP' or on 'Section 326', you'll find a ton of comments. The quick summary is, it's probably best to wait on making changes until we see the final regulations. They were supposed to be out by 10-26-02, but have been delayed largely due to unresolved questions (one of which you raise).

In the meantime, check your state law to see if there's any kind of prohibition on photocopying driver's licenses, just so you're prepared.

That issue is part of Section 326(CIP) of the Patriot Act. The final rule isn't out yet. Taking a copy of a license is not allowed in many states, which prompted numerous comment letters to Treasury re: CIP. They will consider that problem when they write the final rules, which should be out in a few months.
