We train frontline staff to write our customer's account number on the back of a not-on-us check we are cashing for a customer. It's a procedure that documents the teller has verified the relationship for recourse purposes. A few customers have objected to this practice because when the maker of the check receives it back after clearing their account, they will see our customer's account number written on the back. Is this an industry standard? With all the emphasis on privacy, I think stopping this procedure is something we should consider.

Yes, it is an industry standard. There was another thread on this not to long ago. You may want to conduct a search.

It is standard. Our teller system allows the teller to key in the customer's account number into the teller system and it saves to an electronic journal that can be viewed at a a later date, and the account number does not print on the check.

Mel, have you considered having your tellers truncate the number? In other words, don't tell them to write the complete number, perhaps only the last four digits.
