I ahve had the directors cut DVD for ROTK for a few years now and have not watched it yet. Anyone tell me about how long it is (uncut), and am I really missing a great deal from the theatre version?
Also, what's going on with Peter King and the production of The Hobbit?

It is very long but has a lot of extra scenes. I love my extended version best.

I would love to do that. I just always run out of time.

One weekend of inclement weather, and I swear I'll have a geek fest. All 3 LOTR movies, a brief rest, then all of the Start Treks, a brief rest, then all of the Star Wars Episodes...

Nope. I'm usually having to clean house or we have plans. Plus I would probably be watching it by myself.

A friend of mine has the extended editions, but I prefer the theatrical versions. The extra scenes don't really add much (that's why they got cut)--except maybe the giving of gifts at Lothlorien. jmo

FINALLY ABOVE the gnat line

The extended versions definitely added to the movie in my opinion. They brought out some things that were in the books that helped the movie make more sense.

I have the extended version and I have watched it several times. It's been so long since I've seen the cut version I can't honestly tell you which one I like better.

And Shtner's hairpiece looked funny.

I have all versions of LOTR; Extended and Theatrical. I have the extended edition that you have to watch over 2 discs. They just came out with a single disc extended version. I think it's worth it. They put little things in there like after Frodo gets stabbed by the blade and they are camping out, they are camping by the Trolls that Bilbo fought in the Hobbit and now are statues.
I know Peter Jackson wants to make the Hobbit but he's in a legal battle over money owed to him from LOTR so the studio is moving on without him and getting a new director. I know Ian McKellen says that he wants to start making it before he can't act anymore. I really hope that Peter Jackson makes it just to have that same director continuity.
I know what you mean about the Geek Fest. I've always wanted to do that with LOTR and Star Wars. I actually just watched Kill Bill 1 and 2 back to back the other night. Great movie!

I thought it was already determined that Jackson was not going to direct 'The Hobbitt'? It's a shame--he has the vision for the material. I know a lot of diehard Tolkien fans were disgruntled about the theatrical versions omitting or changing parts of the books. But I always thought Tolkien's writing was a verbose mess, and was quite happy to see the screenwriters and editors make sense of it

Overall, Jackson stuck to the spirit of the story. As far as certain scenes edited and only available in the director's cuts, there are varying degrees of audience participation:
1. Those who never read Hobbit and LOTR 2. Those who read Hobbit and LOTR but no the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales (somethings are alluded to in the theater version i.e. "A Balrog of Morgoroth took him" - Only one who has read Silmarillion understands this 3. Those who have read all of the related works.
Example, not sure how Tom Bombadil would have really lent anything to the theater scenes, except some lightheartedness.
Now, a truly epic undertaking , even beyond LOTR, woul dbe for Peter Jackson to produce and direct Silmarillion. That would be incredible.
