I knew it was going to be a bad day when...
I brought up my account inquiry, because my husband had told me that his debit card transaction was rejected when he tried to make a purchase at a local hardware store yesterday.
My account was overdrawn!! No way!! So I checked my account history, it seems that a check that was written for $10 was encoded for $60,010.00. My branch was going to return the check and charge me a fee (the indignation of it all!). The situation was straightened out by my co-workers in the bookkeeping department.
Now I know how our customers feel! Imagine that a bank error happening to a banker? I called my husband and told him he could now use his debit card. He laughed when I told him the story, because I had assumed it was a check he had written. But of course it was me. He concluded the conversation by saying "You probably thought..what the heck did he buy on e-bay now?"

I had a similar situation several years ago, only in my case the bank I was with was acquired by anohter bank. My first direct deposit under the new payroll system went through as a debit instead of credit. Out of 190 employees I was the only one it happened to.

Better than the check being paid and then finding out the business that received the money was filing Ch. 11!

I recall having a customer who had never had a problem with his account. He borrowed for his honeymoon and setting up his new home. After a few months he was suddenly in the OD and blamed it on his new wife. Turns out we programmed the date in his payment transfer field. So instead of $200.00 coming out, it was $604.20(03).

Andy, that reminds me of one that happened at my previous bank. A customer had requested a fee reversal, and when the reversal was processed, the employee put the customer's account number in the fee amount field. We caught it the next day, but the customer's statement had already been mailed. Later that week, she called the bank to ask why she had $28mm in her savings account.

We cannot have accounts at the bank I work for, but the bank arranges for a free account at another bank. I checked my balance one day when the account was new, and found I had in excess of $500,000! When I reported this to the bank, they told me a long list of large deposits, and suggested that I FORGOT to list them in my register, when I told them I was sure I didn't make them, I was told I would have to wait to get my statement before they could do anything (this was before my "compliance days". When I got my statement, my balance was well up past the million mark, and a lot of checks where included with my account number but the name of a well-known brokerage house on them. So I went back to the bank, it took them two days to straighten this out. After they had straightened this all out, they told me to keep checking and let them know if it happens again!! I told them that I would ... from the airport in Taihiti.

As long as it has come back to life...

We had a guy on the NSF list today who wrote a $10,000 check with $7 in his account. In the memo part he wrote "Don't cash until I talk to the bank." They didn't read the memo, and he didn't talk to the bank.

Clearly the payee didn't follow the maker's instructions and your evil bank probably charged the poor soul an NSF fee. wink
