Just a little more football trivia. Some more off subject Football History for Bankbb. My Alma Mater holds a record that will probably never be broken.
In 1899 the University of the South, Sewanee, TN made a road trip west in November. On that road trip beginning Nov 9th they beat Texas--12-0, Nov 10th beat Texas A&M 10-0(sans John football), Nov 11th Tulane 23-0, Nov 13th LSU 34-0, and Nov 14th Ole Miss 12-0. They won 5 games in 6 days. They finished the season with 11 shutouts. The only team to score on them was Auburn which they beat 11-10.

Impressive! And, I really like the part where Auburn got beat. grin

Actually this is false and the Pac 12 now admits that the Wisconsin QB's knee did come down with him in possession of the ball. The Pac 12 has suspended the officials and reprimanded them. Pac 12 says that Wisconsin should have been allowed to snap a ball.

The PAC 12 isn't known for ethical ref's. Remember in basketball, they had their own bounty issues.

Worst scr*wing i ever saw from the Pac 12 was back in early 2000s when OU travelled to Oregon..........late in the game, OU recovered an onside kick.....guy who recovered it comes up with the ball...jumps around...then hands the ball to the official...yet, somehow, Oregon was still awarded the ball. Makes me mad still just thinking about it.

And in 2006 in the Oregon/OU game when the onsides kick didn't go 10 yards, the OU player had the ball and running toward the sidelines with it and yet the refs were unpiling the players from the pile and gave the ball to Oregon. Even with replay. The replay official ending up quiting.

I remember that game and that call. I hated that for OU, NOT because I'm a Sooner fan, but because I HATE it when the ref's get it wrong...ESPECIALLY after reviewing it on replay!

Yes that was bad! As bad as the screw job that Nebraska got at Penn State in the early 80s. Two consecutive bad calls needed for Penn State to pull out a narrow upset.

I agree....get the call right, no matter what. Kinda like this new stupid targeting rule: officials can review to overrule ejections. Well, if an ejection isn't warranted because the player didn't lead with his head, then the 15 yard penalty isn't warranted either....yet, the penalty stands. Stupid.

I don't like the replay of the targeting ejection much either. I wonder if that is because of timimg. Maybe the replay official doesn't have to overturn the ejection before the next play is run.

For example, safety makes a clean hit that is penalized and ejected. Penalty is marked off and the next play is run before the replay official is able to determine if the player should have been ejected. Replay offical buzzes down and overturns the ejection but the play has already taken place.

I don't know that to be the case, but to me, that is a possible justification for not overturning the penalty.

It wasn't the case this weekend Jays.....on at least 3 occasions (one of them the OU game, so i can tell you for sure the details of that one)...the play was reviewed prior to the next play (this involved OU safety Gabe Lynn, on what was obviously NOT targeting...good play...shoulder to shoulder hit)...so the replay official overthrew the ejection, but by rule the penalty stayed. Same thing played out in a few other games already (i'm told).

They don't wait to review it...it happens prior to the next play...just like all reviews.

Right, I am just saying maybe, by rule, the ejection part of the play doesn't have to be reviewed and overruled before the next play is run. So that is the reason for the replay official to not able to overturn the penalty part of the play, only the ejection.

Thinking about it for a second, I bet the rules people didn't want to open up a can of worms when it comes to overturning penalties. How long until holding penalties or pass interference penalties were reviewed.

Personally, i'd be in favor of reviewing those penalties too, but yeah, that's another subject i guess.

On the ejection thing.....that's what i'm saying....the review happens before the next play, and they're only reviewing the ejection. There is no waiting around for a play or two...by rule, they review any ejection for targeting before the next play.....and if that rejection draws them to the conclusion that the player shouldn't be ejected (because he, in fact, did NOT lead with his helmet), then the penalty becomes, obviously, bogus as well....yet by rule they will not overturn it.

Stupid rule! I see what they are trying to accomplish, but if they overturn the ejection, then there shouldn't have been a flag anyway. Therefore, no penalty!

The problem you run into is in real time your eyes can deceive you. A legal hit may look illegal.

I'm not sure why coaches were telling players to go high in the first place. The proper technic is belt high with helment ball side. Helps force fumbles.

Except on a reception, the ball may very well not be belt-high at the time of the hit. Players will (and should, IMO) go for wherever the ball is, and that's often higher than belt-high on a catch.

Not if Mark Sanchez is throwing it. It would be about 2 feet above the receivers hands.

I think we should just stop tackling and the refs should blow the whistle when two hands touch the ball carrier. No blocking below the lower rib cage either.

In most cases, not all, the penalties are assessed because of a late hit and it may or may not be targeting, which is ejection. If a player hits a receiver/running back late helmet to helmet the call is targeting. If the targeting call is changed, there still is a late hit and 15 yard penalty.

Pulling people out of the ditc...
so, after upgrading my iphone to IOS7, I thought I would try out the new and improved Siri...asked if the Big 12 was a relevant football conference, and Siri replied back "crickets"
