That is always a difficult conversation even in your own mind. Hopefully Mandalaye can get some relief at the second vet and the rainbow bridge can wait.

Okie--I've had my Jack for about 5 months now and I simply adore her. She's filled a big hole left by my pit that's been gone 2 years this December. I still miss Abby but Sadie has been a wonderful addition to our lives.

If any of you are my friend on Facebook, you will often see pictures of my loveable Pitbull, Cyrus. Never thought in a million years I would have a Pitbull, but wouldn't trade him for anything.

You can never 'replace' a beloved lost pet - however you can get another to love and cherish.

Back from the vet's office. Mandy is having her teeth cleaned tomorrow. They will do a biopsy of the ulcers on her gums and we will go from there. The last time she had her teeth cleaned (January) she had relief almost immediately - better breath - less water consumption.

I'll let you all know tomorrow how it goes.

Thanks for everyone's kind thoughts/prayers. MUCH appreciated!!!

Prayers for you and your pup.

Many years ago my Rudy had tumors in his mouth - I forget what they were called - the only reason they weren't considered cancer was because they didn't spread. They were quite aggressive, though, and would grow back if they were cut out. I ended up taking him to an oncologist who did chemo injections, which helped considerably.

Anyway, my point is that once you know what the growths are, there may be alternative treatments that could help her going forward.

Good news and continued prayers!!

On a side note I can send you a Rottweiler that while sweet is still what you might called challenged in the way of listening, learning, absorbing, listening, learning, absorbing, listening, learning, whoops forgot to absorb that one..... You get the gist?

She is free to a good home. Will deliver if within 500 miles. PLEASE!

I have her Momma, who is the sweetest, most adorable baby alive but her daughter is like the worst teenager you've ever run across.

She would just be an adorable addition to your family, bless her heart.

Wow, Okie. While we had A LOT of trouble with this guy on the left - at least he is 'only' 40 pounds. He's over two now and my husband even commented the other night that he's turning into a good dog - finally. Of course everything in the house has chew marks - recliners, chair legs, base trim, carpet, etc.

We've talked to the vet's office twice so far. Mandy is still in surgery and it's taking a long time. Apparently they are having to extract a lot of teeth; however she's doing well. That poor thing must have been in absolute agony.

She has 8 teeth left. I can't imagine the pain she's been in. The vet said the infection was rampant. I will pick her up in about 2 hours and we'll talk then. I have no idea what she'll eat, but probably not too much tonight since she'll be groggy. Hopefully when this heals she'll feel much better than she did.

Does anyone have any experience caring for a toothless dog?

My guess would be soft (canned food). I have my senior girl on 1/2 can each night just to supplement because she's becoming more toothless and skinny. she LOVES it.

I get her Senior Chicken and Rice and she thinksknows she is very, very special! smile

We have three gumby dogs. You can get really good (read expensive) powder to make a mash that dogs love. We still give our girls dry food but soften it with broth, or soup, gravy, tiny bits of leftovers moistened well with additional water. They still need some crunch for the teeth they have left.

Thanks, Truff. Could you give me more information on the powder, please? She's already been very expensive to feed and I'll check into that as another option. LOVE the broth on the dry idea.

Joker - I'll also check into the canned (after her gums heal) senior chicken and rice.

I recently inherited an old girl with very few teeth. After much experimentation she actually prefers kibble (small pieces) with a little bit of canned mixed in.

When she first had her teeth removed earlier this year she was on soft food only for awhile, but it didn't take too long before she lost interest in that. The friend who had her tried a number of different foods. When he passed away and the dog moved in with me I tried a few other things, but she still ate very little until the day I tried the dry kibble.

A few other comments - without teeth to hold it in her tongue hangs out a lot and she makes a mess drinking water smile

It's actually called dehydrated dog food, Skittles. Here's one brand that shows how you make it at the bottom of the page. We'd make a 3 lb margarine tub full and keep it refrigerated. The girls would get 1/4 c for breakfast and kibble with table scraps in broth for dinner. That seems to keep them eating even when they're fussy as older dogs can get to be.

Oh, save the water from tuna when you open the cans too. That makes for a yummy dinner in a dog's world. wink
