How does a Reg get a certain "letter or letters" like Reg CC?

Lately, it has been the next available letter combination, unless another lettered regulation has been repealed and is available.

Knowing a Regulation by the letter makes it easy to determine what it will be referred to in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) for The Federal Reserve.
Everything for the Fed is 12CFR twohundred something
Reg A = 201 Reg B = 202 Reg Z = 226 etc

Sometimes the Fed tries to be "mnemonic" with its letter assignments. Regulation V used to be for the sale of U.S. Government Victory Bonds. Regulation E covers Electronic Fund Transfers. Regulation P used to be for Bank Protection; now it covers Privacy rules. But when there's no happy coincidence of the right letter being available, the Fed typically tacks the new Regs on at the end of the list.

The latest proposed regulation is GG. Conveniently enough, it would address blocking illegal internet Gambling transactions.

And when Reg V was for Victory Bonds the pages were numbered in Roman Numerals.

I must admit that it's sorta scary to realize that my first banking job predates almost everything talked about in Threads. Like Regulations B, C, E, G, M, P (for Privacy), R, S, V (this time around), W, Z, AA, BB, CC, DD, EE, and FF. And yes, BSA, OFAC, the OTS, FIRREA, HOEPA, MICR encoding .... well, you get the idea.

What ever did we talk about back then? We didn't have American Idol or Dancing with the Stars, cable television; or MySpace, YouTube, or Google (Al Gore hadn't invented the internet, yet).

10:00 - 10:30 Coffee break with other Down Town big wigs
10:30 - 12:00 Review bank activity from prior day
LUNCH
1:00 - 3:00 Customers
3:00 - 3:30 Make sure Tellers Balanced

I loaned them to Cecil B. DeMille for a little movie he directed back in 1956.
