We're trying to establish some procedures regarding the hiring process. I understand that banks (we're FDIC insured) cannot hire an employee that has been convicted of any criminal offense involving dishonesty or a breach of trust...My question: How do other bankers out there ensure that they comply w/ this? What are the steps/procedures in going about finding this type of thing out about potential hires?
I'd really appreciate some help.

Finger print cards go to the FBI to check. The response is a bit tardy but we also ask on the app for employment whether they have been convicted or enter ajudication. We have to fire a few people after starting because they lied.

You should be conducting criminal background checks in all counties/states where the person lived. Conduct a complete social security number check first to determine the addresses where the person lived, then check against the application and the criminal records.

Our bank uses a company that does both the drug test and the background check and that has been working really well for us - They have found stuff that you don't find through the Sec of State, DPS, etc when you just run the DL number. And their drug test is a really good one that allows our managers to collect specimens (saliva) - They also check educational history (to make sure we didn't get lied to on resumes ,etc) - really good stuff. Make sure you do your homework and find a company that can do all of that!
