I catch this show occasionally, and this guy just really seems like someone who is trying to do the right thing.
How does his show work? Do the people pay for the work he and his crew does, or is it paid for by the show or advertisers or whatever?

I think it's a non-profit organization <Make it Right Foundation>. The people he generally does the work for can't afford him - they've already put their money out to the 'bad' contractors.
I LOVE this guy.

I thought he died in the nineties. I saw a movie about it with Val Kilmer.

MG - I 'Googled' it. You know he's been working in New Orleans in 2009. The 'new' show on Sunday night was actually in 2007, but I teared up on that one.

He helped fix one of our friend's home. According to them, they were responsible for materials that were not donated, which most of it was.

Love the guy and the premise. The one Sunday-talk about a bad cloud. How they all survived a 17 foot fall is a miracle. I don't think a bomb would bring down the new deck he built!
The scary part is many of the ones I have seen are relatively new homes that were poorly built.

Awesome guy; wish all contractors would take a lesson from him.
Looks like he eats nails for breakfast...

The scary part is many of the ones I have seen are relatively new homes that were poorly built. There are a lot of newish homes in our area build by a McDeveloper- low cost new homes etc. Lots of them are having serious problems, and if you drive through their neighborhoods when the wind is above 25 mph it looks like the shingles on their roofs are waving at you

Sad. Even those that took all the right steps (permits, references, etc) get screwed...

If I ever hire a contractor to build a house I have multiple criteria:
1. He must be over the age of 60 2. His truck must be beat up. 3. He must be surly.

As the wife of a construction superintendent - let me help you refine those, Buccs: If I ever hire a contractor to build a house I have multiple criteria:
1. He must be over the age of 60 have obviously calloused hands, dress professionally but not nicely (can't get dirty if you're dressed too well), and have little patience for red tape. 2. His truck must be beat up full of tools that look well used. 3. He must be surly, but friendly. 4. He must pick up a hammer and do some of the work himself.

MG - I 'Googled' it. You know he's been working in New Orleans in 2009. There was a 5 show series where they built a home for an older lady and her kids/grandkids in NOLA that was awesome! The building stuff was really interesting but the personal stories / impact on the builders and the families really made it memorable.

Holmes on Homes is my absolute FAVORITE show on TV. I love his ethic. I love his look. My 'significant other' is always telling me when 'my man' is on TV. We like to joke about whether or not he is commando under those bibs.
Seriously - he's #1 on TV in my book.
Addicted to HGTV as well. If I could only have one channel this would be it, although not crazy about Design on a Dime or that lady that does the color wheel.

I'm also addicted to HGTV. I like Candice Olsen's stuff - don't get me wrong she's amazing - but it's too glitzy for my taste. I've been watching 'First Time Design' and 'Curb Appeal - The Block' and really love them, too.
However, I think Mike Holmes is truly amazing and wish more contractors had his ethics.

It would be great if they showed him confronting the scumbags' work he is fixing...
One couple hired someone to redo their front steps/entry. Guy said no permit needed. Couple sues him for not finishing, then he calls the city and says the couple never pulled a permit...

Love the show - try to catch it weekly.
Now if I could just persuade my better half that most remodeling projects take longer than 48 minutes with commercial breaks....

Love the show! He in so sincere. HGTV is one of my favorite channels. Last night I saw where some people hired a guy to build a bar in their basement and an entertainment space. They had seen the contractors work and were impressed. He took the money and ran. Its not like they just picked any contractor, they had seen his work. You never know I don't guess.

And that seems to be a common theme through these... they normally state how they have vetted out the contractors, viewed their work, were happy with what they saw, and got good referalls.
And then poof, then they go bad or try something funky... scray stuff. And the laws, especially in Canada where the show originated, have really lax laws oddly enough protecting the consumers in these situations. Even here, whenever you sing a contract, you are normally agreeing to go in front of an arbritration board (of industry people) to resolve your dispute with the builder.

Maybe they didn't like your contract "singing"? Stay away from American Idol!
