Anybody have any ideas on how to get back to good froma lost or stolen Iphone. I believe it was left in a taxi Sunday night. However, later sunday night it was no longer going straight to my voicemail. This makes me think someone had already removed my SIM card. Hasnt shown up at Taxi lost and found...... So i am thinking its pretty much gone. Anybody have any advice isntead of paying nearly 700 bucks for a new one? Not to mention the music, personal data that was on the phone

seems to me if you are irresponsible enough to leave one in a taxi then likely you'd leave another if you had insurance from your provider, make a claim and get the new phone. If no insurance, you're gonna be paying out the wazoo for a replacement... there are government programs that can pinpoint the location of any cell phone via GPS tracking, but getting them to use it for this reason is highly unlikely

Yes I was irresponsible(thanks dad), however this is most certainly the exception not the rule, as I have never lost a valuable possession(with the exception of my dignity). and unfortunately ATT does not offer insurance on the phone - I am fairly conifdent that ATT could locate it if they were so inclined via the IMEI number, but I would imagine its not in their interest to try and track it down looks like i will be buying another...

I'm sorry to hear that. I thought the iPhone could be tracked by its GPS from a home computer. At least that what I thought was on a commercial.
But the good thing is, you didn't get that awkward string of text messages I sent to you early Monday morning. te-he

What a bummer! I worked for at&t, there is not a way to located it by IMEI numbers unless the person who stole it physically brings it into the store and registers the IMEI. Then they can search their database and see if that number has been registered. You could try asking them to do that, but they can't prove it was stolen, the person could say they "found" or bought it from someone. Try calling at&t customer care and asking for refurbished iphone prices. they have the same warranty as the new ones. i have had refurbished blackberries and never had a problem. Good luck

Maybe its cheaper for you to pay the early termination fee and get a new phone under a new contract with a new phone number?
Personally as an iphone user, if I lost or trashed my phone now I'd dump my ATT account eat the early termination fee and get myself a sweet Android based phone. I just object to too many things that Apple & ATT have done to cripple the iphone.

But the good thing is, you didn't get that awkward string of text messages I sent to you early Monday morning. te-he I think that is a service you have to pay extra for. I have AT&T and just got an LG Arena. Looking through all the goodies they offer, GPS, TV, are all extra monthly charges. Even restricting the phone so that a tween or teen can use it costs you extra per month.

So i think I am just gonna hold up on a new phone and use and older one that I have.... I need to learn some patience as well as realize that I just cant replace things(especially expensive gives) whenever I want to, coupled with the fact that a new version will probably be release around june/july

I have AT&T and although I just signed a new contract in October, I can get a "discounted" rate on an iPhone if I want to upgrade now instead of waiting another year and a half. I looked online and I can get a refurbished 8GB one for $249 or a new one for $299. The other ones are available too, for more $ of course. I figured out that if I canceled my account though and paid the early termination fee of $150, I could get the same refurbished 8GB iPhone for $49 So I would save money doing it that way. I think I'll just wait though, but if I really needed a replacement phone (as you do) I'd probably go the early termination route. And like someone else said, unless you really want the iPhone, you could then go to a different carrier and get a great deal on a droid or a different smartphone.

Dooby, keep in mind too that Apple will probably be announcing a new version of the iphone soon with a release this summer. If you buy one now, you'll be ticked that you didn't get the new one. (Assumming of course they stick to the schedule they've had for the last few years.) Although apparently you already know that.
The GPS tracking thingy is part of MobileMe and costs $99 per year. Also it has to be installed on the phone prior to losing it so it won't do Dooby any good now. Its also very easy to disable so I'm not sure it would help much anyways.
