Guess who is supposed to be going to the Outer Banks in 2 days for a full week?! UGH... Me, of course!
My parents booked the beach house 6+ months ago. It's right on the beach and we were all so excited to spend a week right on the ocean. We're not going up until Saturday afternoon, so the hurricane will be gone by then, we're just worried about any potential damage to the area we're staying at. Ugh...
I need to stop planning vacations. Earlier this year, a fluke blizzard hit NC the night before we were supposed to fly to Florida for a week. Everything shut down and our flights were cancelled and we had to drive ourselves to Orlando the next day...

Where on the OBX? We love it down there. We stay in Avon usually.

having lived through more than my share of hurricanes, if the area is hit, i'd suggest not going to "vacation" unless you want to go help with the cleanup that will be involved. depending on the storm surge and wave issues, beach could be gone, there could be no power, ferries to the outer banks may not be running, no phone service, etc etc etc...
sightseers are generally not treated with great kindness by local officials in the immediate aftermath...
I'd suggest a vacation to Cinncinnati - not much bad happens there once the football teams starts practicing, their felons are all on the field...

Luckily my dad purchased the vacation insurance when he booked the house rental. So if we need to cancel due to damage, he won't lose all his money. I told them, no biggie. If we can't go, they can still come down to NC, stay at our house and since I already have time off, we can drive 2-3 hours to the ocean and spend a few days at the beach. Like in SC/Myrtle Beach area, which really won't be affected. It's all good. It's just frustrating... Where on the OBX? We love it down there. We stay in Avon usually. Kill Devil Hills sightseers are generally not treated with great kindness by local officials in the immediate aftermath...
Thanks for the heads up!

I'd suggest a vacation to Cincinnati - not much bad happens there once the football teams starts practicing, their felons are all on the field... I would recommend leaving your bicycles behind however as crazed motorists still roam the streets seeking cyclists to terrorize. ::Makes mental note to not plan vacations anywhere near Aggs....::

Love the OBX although we go to Corolla because we love the 4-wheel drive beach.
If you have insurance you should be fine other than the disappointment of not getting to go.
People here used to ask when my vacation was so they could plan NOT to be on vacation then because it always rained the entire week. Now I leave town so they are safe.

Yeah, no kidding! I am going on a cruise to the Bahamas in late January/early February and then going to Disney after that. Please avoid it for your own sanity. I am assuming a giant blizzard will come through, making it impossible for us to get to our cruise ship in time - even though we're driving down the day before. On our honeymoon on the Gulf of Mexico (Indian Rocks Beach, FL), we had thunderstorms all week. Couldn't go to the beach and couldn't enjoy the Mustang convertible we rented for the trip. My vacation timing sucks.

All the articles start with "Kill Devil Hills, NC" so I know it's bad. And I just caught your suggestion for my user name. Nice...

<----- Is an OBX Nut
I would assume they are broadcasting from Kill Devil Hills or Nags Head, etc because they have access to hotels there for the news crews.
Have stayed in Rodanthe, Waves, Avon and this year....Hatteras Village. Last year we were in Waves for the after-effects of Hurricane Bill and some 'almost hurricane' blew through the day before we left. We loved Hatteras Village and will stay there again next year IF the darn hurricane doesn't blow it off the map. Rustic, laid back....authentic. But you have to be able to do without McDonalds, Wendy's, etc.
Aggs, everything I am reading leads me to believe you should be OK for Saturday, especially in Kill Devil Hills. Surf will be rough but it's ALWAYS rough. Stay out of the ocean for a few days.
Hoping your plans aren't affected. My whole year revolves around my trip to OBX....heaven on earth.

There is a lot of very interesting history down there....indians, pirates, civil war, WWII. Many of the towns have had name changes over the course of time. An example - Avon used to be called Kinnakeet.
It's just a very fascinating place.
Hatteras Island is actually part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Development is only allowed within the actual villages (Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village). Outside the limits of the villages you drive for miles and see nothing but unspoiled seashore, vegetation and wildlife.

They have horses that are decendent from the originals...they are kept in a 'pony pen' and are on display a mile or so from the ferry landing. I believe there are also horses up near Corolla - they roam free there to the best of my knowledge. But they are considered 'protected' so you aren't supposed to get close.

There are "wild horses" in Corolla. If you go on the 4-wheel drive beach you will probalby see them. They are protected and you are not supposed to get within 50 feet of them. We saw them almost every day this year and I am not sure how wild they are. They came right up to my granddaughter and sniffed her ponytail. They just kind of meandered down the beach ignoring all the people and did their thing and then went behind the dunes. We have a lot of pictures of them right near our vehicles and grandchildren.

I was thinking about you this morning Aggs - and this is what I had hoped for. Have a wonderful time and make sure to tell us all about it. I've never been there, but have heard wonderful things.
