Ford. They didn't have their hand out when Obama was throwing money at the auto industry.

Ford Focus. I have one that is serving me pretty well, and it's fun to drive (I have the standard transmission). I haven't had it long enough to know if it matches the longevity of the Civic or Prisms (had both in the past that have lasted 130 - 150,000 miles) but it looks good so far.

Everything written about the Cruze so far has been positive and it may well be the 1st decent small Chevy...ever. Of course, chevy doesnt actually build it. Focus has a good track record. Both are probably competent vehicles. Buy the Honda.

I have driven a Ford Focus for three years with absolutely no problems. As a general rule, I would never purchase a car that is either brand new or totally redesigned the first year it comes out. Let the engineers work the bugs out a few years. I would vote Ford.

If the choices are only those two, Ford hands down!

New Buick Regal. Love mine. It's sporty and rated better than the Lexus and Acuras in its class. Saw the new Regal the other day and said, WOW! But between the ford and the chevy, I would go Ford.

I just bought a used Ford Focus as a second car and while I haven't had it long, it is a nice little car. I can tell you that when looking at used, I looked at Ford and Chevy and the Fords held their value much better. Neither is up there with Honda or Toyota as far as resale value but of the two I liked the Ford best.
As far as Chevy not building the Cruz, I drive by the GM plant in Lordstown Ohio where they build the Cruz on my way to Cleveland. Not sure what they are doing there if they aren't building the cars.

Buy a Mercedes. I just heard on the radio that a bank teller makes as much as a nurse and a nurse can afford one. MB commericial.
FWIW I do not know any teller that makes as much as a part time nurse.

Repairs on a Mercedes will kill your budget! I would go with the Ford. they are holding their value better than chevys and are great cars.

Everything written about the Cruze so far has been positive and it may well be the 1st decent small Chevy...ever. Of course, chevy doesnt actually build it. Chevy doesn't actually build it? Where do you get your information on that? My dad and my uncle go to work every day in Lordstown, Ohio to build the Chevy Cruze. The Lordstown plant has been there for over 40 years, and recently went through a massive upgrade to build the Cruze. My dad does admit it's the highest quality car they have ever produced. Unless they are just pretending to go to work, I'm pretty sure that Chevy builds it. I'm not going to get into the whole government handout debate here. I'm just going to say that the plant in Lordstown is the last good employer in that area (near Youngstown, Ohio).

I've never been partial to anything but old Mopars because my first car was one. That said, I've heard great things about the Cruze, but I've owned a Focus and have owned more Fords than any other car in my adult life. I would go with Focus because I know their track record. The handout thing does play a role in my decision-making. Ford is a solid company with the best quality vehicles between the Atlantic and Pacific, although I HAD to buy a G8 GT a couple years ago...whoa. BTW, the G8 is an Australian-made car built by a company that GM purchased....not really a GM and not really an American car, but it is NICE.

Ford Focus.
I've had several of the small Ford cars (Escort/Mercury Tracer), and the least mileage I got out of one was 180k, and I sold it at that point. My mom, dad, brother, and sister-in-law all drive the Focus, and all are very pleased. My brother's "new" 2009 is getting 40 mpg on his drive to work.

Way, way south.

Although I was born and raised a Chevy/GM guy, I currently own a Lincoln (and another brand X vehicle), and it's not bad at all.
I like that Ford has remained solvent, so that is something to thing about, but the Cruze has gotten stellar reviews and one review said that it out handled and had a faster track time than 95% of the vehicles on the road today. Impressive.
