latest & greatest Nook or Kindle?

I've finally decided to take the plunge.
I want the item for reading. I would like to be able to read in bed but not get a blinding headache.
Not sure I will read with full sunlight on the screen but I heard that there are differences between these two with respect to glare, etc.
I want color so I can download even more magazines that I may/may not look at for months.
Other tricks are attractive but not selling points, although it may be useful to have internet....
I know Nook and Kindle are tooth for tooth in the business so I would like to hear from those of you who are currently using these.
PS I don't want a tablet or similar. I like the size of the e-books. Packs nicely and fits in the hands/laps nicely.
Thanks!

Nook color: love it. I can play games, get internet, MS apps, etc, without carrying a laptop.

I have just a regular Kindle and an iPad. Since you aren't interested in a tablet the only thing I'll say about reading on the iPad is that it is heavier than the Kindle so for prolonged reading I prefer the Kindle.
My sister does have the Kindle Fire and she loves it! Reading in the sun is an issue but if you don't plan on doing that it really shouldn't be a problem for you.

But it's the same size and would perform the same functions - PLUS MORE.
and it's really cute.

Kindle Fire. I love mine. I can read or play games, connects to wi-fi and I use it on the train while checking people out discretely. It's quite a bit heavier than the standard Kindle, so keep that in mind if you'll be reading in bed a lot. It could give you cramps.

I would tend to argee with iBimmer while you may be just reading now, later on you may find new uses for it. I bought a cheap reader (to see if I would use it) and soon after bought the samsung galaxy. I can do so much more with the galaxy.

My Kindle takes a lot of abuse. Nothing has broken yet. Although I do know that if I put my iPad through what my Kindle has gone through it wouldn't fare as well.

I've been using my Kindle (keyboard) 3G since last December. The wife and kids gave it to me for my birthday. I did't think I would like it at all. Since then I've spent about $60 on "content" and I have only downloaded 175 books. I enjoy holding a 'real book' as much as anyone, but you can't beat it for taking your whole library with you on a trip -- fiction, reference / history, inspirational, humor and a few word games. There's no way I could bring that much variety in "real" books.
With 3G, I can download virtually anywhere via the cell phone network. We have Amazon Prime, so I can 'borrow' a book a month from their "prime lending library" list. That has saved a few bucks, too.
I haven't tried any subscriptions, yet. For some reason I was thinkig that subscriptions only stay on the device for a limited amount of time. I may be wrong about that.
My daughter has a Kindle Fire and I've played with it a bit. It would be the way to go if you have to have color and I'd want to have color if I was reading magazines.

Wow, across the spectrum in products som I've never heard of...until now.
I love real books, too and I fear for the paper industry, but, then agin, they have the regulations supporting them, don't they?
I want a reader for trips and reading in bed without my hands cramping up and a light source that just isn't quite right.
Keep the recommendations coming. Also, if anyone happens across an article discussing the latest nook/kindle products, I'd appreciate hearing about it.
Thanks and, for those of you on the East coast with me, keep safe!

Trees - I think you're probably going to get pros and cons for each. I love my Kindle Fire but I've never used a Nook so my thoughts are skewed.
Do some research - see how much they cost - and then make your decision. I think you'll be happy with either one.

Started the journey with a 1st generation Nook...have graduated to the Nook tablet. LOVE the backlight, the ease in using. Yet my aunt swears by the Kindle Fire.
