Are you driving north or south to get around the lake?

South... I live in St Johns, which is north of Lansing. I've done this drive so many times I even have an IPASS to get through Chicago tolls. Leaving after work, so we hit Chicago around 8pm or later.
Bankbb1 - I vote for a bridge to be built across that big lake! Have thought about taking the ferry, but we always seem to take 4 day weekend trips and that does not allow for the time!
Good news is I get to see my Grandma who is in her mid-90's. Love that lady. I used to live there and that makes me miss her even more. My husband is not looking forward to spending time in her apartment that is kept much warmer than our house!

Yay!! It doesn't seem like anyone is ever happy to visit my state! My Mrs. loves it. We've done some good summer trips up there to the Ely area and around the north shore etc. for lighthouses and all that. Wants to go up this winter, we'll see. My sister doesn't live up there anymore so we don't have as much of a reason to go.

I live just 20 miles south of the Headwaters to the Mississippi. I've walked across those rocks more in times then I care to count!

I think there is supposed to be freezing rain turning into snow on Saturday in the citiies ... just to warn ya. I also don't think they are done cleaning up yet from last weekend .... That is what friends down south (Minneapolis) are telling me anyway.

RR Sarah, since you're that close to the headwaters of the Mississippi, could you toss in a couple of gallons? The river is drying up down here near St. Louis.

I have heard they are still cleaning up. They have roughly 24 hours to finish! But, I used to live there - so even if they don't, I can manage.
Saturday night I have 2 parties to go to - so I hope it doesn't get too nasty!

Been to Minnesota three times....all for canoe trips in the boundary waters...........love THAT aspect of Minnesota! But the mosquitos and black flies were malicious!!! Well...actually, we only hit black fly season on the first trip....didn't do that again!

New Ulm is a pretty area... not sure why it's new though. If I remember right, there is a North St Paul, a South St Paul, a West St Paul, but not an East St Paul. You would think there would not be a West St Paul, since west of St Paul is Minneapolis.
My husband is always amazed by the 3 rivers in the area. We have a river in Lansing - the Grand River... but when he sees the Stillwater, Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers he always says they are ocean rivers!

You just need to pray hard that we get lots of snow this year. That should help you out. The colorado river, which supplies water to about five states, is also drying up. Here in northwest Texas, farmers delete the underground ogallala aquifer faster than it can recharge itself with rain water. Once it's used up, this area will probably be a wasteland....or back to the dust bowl days of the 30's. At that time, experts agreed that this part of Texas is not suitable for farming...even dry land farming didn't work. Then, someone figured out how to tap into the ogallala for irrigation......the beginning of the end, IMO.

Saturday night I have 2 parties to go to - so I hope it doesn't get too nasty! Ummm, not to be a Debbie Downer (Yes I am a dood, EdAudit) but starting Friday night rain will move in and depending on how the temps change the precip will go from rain to freezing rain to sleet to snow and possibly a mix as well. The potential around the Twin Cities is for 4-6 inches of snow on top of the rain. ( I am the amateur meteorologist for our audit team) Really glad to have someone visiting my state but Saturday will not be a good day to be oot and aboot as we say here.

Western Oklahoma and Texas share a lot of dirt during droughts (like now). A lot fields that were planted with wheat 3 years ago are dunes right now. Its not as bad as the dust bowl yet, but its not good.

Last year we visited on Veterans weekend in November. Had like 50 degrees on Friday and woke up Saturday to almost 12 inches of snow. Blew our plans for that Saturday - plus shocked my husband! I just shrugged my shoulders, I had been through it before.
BTW - I am and always will be a Vikings fan :-)

I'm just about to leave Minneapolis after spending a month here. It's a very depressing city. There isn't a lot going on and I felt like a hamster using the skyway each day.
I laughed really hard after some locals were telling me about how great Thursday night was and I decide to go out and the city looks like a ghost town and there are a grand total of 8-12 people in the bar.
