I am in the habit of finding a very low step or incline that I stand on and stretch, stretch my heels. I just do that for a minute or two. I've been doing that for the last couple of years and no longer have any problems with that. Like Melissa I am not a runner. I do this so I don't have to give up my heels.

Lots of good advice on here. I'll add just a few comments. Seeing a Dr is good advice if you are seeing a Dr that normally see's runner s and athlete's. Dont waste your time seeing a physician that only deals with sedentary patients. I've seen some of these guys recommend custom otrthotics that are hard as bricks. (ok for a walker or standing on, but devastating to a runners foot) There are plantar sleeves that will afford you some relief, but they DO NOT cure it. Only time will do that. Active stretching is important. The boot works well for some people, but only as part of a complete PT regimen that includes the stretches, and anti-inflamitories. Using a ball to roll the bottom of your foot is good therapy. CHECK YOUR SHOES!!! If they are old (more than 400 miles or 6 months old at the outside) they are not helping. Are yo in the right shoes? If you are a neutral runner and are in a stability shoe (or vice versa), you could be damaginf your feet and knees. Patience, it will not go away quickly, but with effort it will go away.

Have any of you heard of kids having this? My son has had heel pain for almost 5 years now - daily. Doesn't matter if he is active in sports or not. He walks like an old man (especially in the morning) and during sports he is in a lot of pain. I haven't taken him to a podiatrist but our family doctor said it is plantar fasciitis and there is nothing he can do other than stretching, pain reliever, & the rolling ball on the bottom of the foot. He said boys get this and they usually outgrown it around the age of 15. (He will be 15 this summer.) We have tried every orthotic insert - arch support, gel inserts, heel inserts, etc., two pair of socks, every kind of shoe. Nothing helps. Football & basketball season really bother him. Baseball is a little easier (not sure if this is due to not being as active or because he is a catcher and is bent down in a crouch and maybe this stretches his calves???)

I'd say the impact on the foot of football and basketball is the culprit in those two sports.

If nonsurgical treatments fail to relieve your pain, your doctor may refer you to a specialist such as an orthopedist or podiatrist. If you are an athlete, your doctor may refer you to a sports medicine specialist to look for problems with how your feet strike the ground, how your feet are shaped, or your training routine. http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/plantar-fasciitis-when-to-call-a-doctor

I don't want to sound like a witch doctor, but have you checked into using essential oils?

I suffered from plantar fasciitis approximately 2 years ago. It is extremely painful so I sympathize with your friend. Went to a podiatrist who recommended custom orthotics. I was skeptical but have been pain free after 6 weeks. Highly recommend the doctor visit.

I have suffered with plantar fasciitis for years. I have done all of the things mentioned by others and they help, but it never went away. Recently, my general doc gave me a tip that has been very helpful. He told me to get a small rectangular container, fill it with ice water and dip my heels in it for 30 minutes a day. I'm able to use the end of the container to keep my foot out of the water, so just my heels rest in the ice water. I've never gotten close to 30 minutes, but I do 12 minutes per heel every morning. My general doc says ice packs do not get enough cold long enough to the inflamed area. Anyway, it helped me a LOT, so much so it's worth the time in my morning routine. I record Jimmy Fallon each night, so that is when I watch 24 minutes of his show while I'm letting my heel get really cold. It feels good though, the whole thing is kind of enjoyable and I start my day with a laugh.

I would make the same recommendation JWills. My husband has had plantar fasciitis and has had great success with essential oils and stretches recommended by our chiropractor.

My husband suffered with that and finally visited a foot doctor. He gave him a boot type thing to wear at night, which pulls your toes toward you. Also a little patch to put on the bottom of his foot during the day. It seemed like very passive treatment, but by golly, it went away after a couple of weeks. Or is just ran its course.
