This is a post about something that happened at the debate last night, but it is not about the debates and not political. The title: Mixed Reaction to National Anthem in Media Filing Room: To Stand or Not to StandSIMI VALLEY, California — Most reporters continued to sit while the National Anthem played at the start of the GOP’s presidential primary debate. Breitbart News captured a video showing most reporters and support staff sitting down, instead of standing as most Americans typically do. http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/...tand-not-stand/Do you stand for the national anthem? In this case, it was being played at the event that they were covering. I think they were in an adjoining room. We even stand, in my house, if it is playing on tv. Are we alone in that?

Stand unless a handicap (physical or mental) does not enable you to stand.
For example, a journalist was singled out for texting during the National Anthem in the past at the White House Correspondents Dinner earlier this year.
Stand or no stand can we all agree that this is an issue?

I am sad to report not at home as I have not given it much though but in public always. Yes I agree it is hypocritical.

Stand at events, not at home. Never really thought about that, but it's an interesting question Q.

Down here in flyover country we stand at pubic gatherings (i.e. the bar), but in private most of my friends and family do not stand. Sorry QCL!!!!

Strictly my opinion, your mileage may vary:
Individuals present at an event at which a national anthem is performed or played as part of the event stand as a sign of respect, whether it's the anthem of the country of the host or of another participant (think Olympics). There's no real expectation that those not attending the event will stand, but some may -- including those 2,500 miles away in the comfort of their homes.
That said, it would be unacceptable to berate or make an example of anyone at the event who is unable or simply chooses not to stand.

I've never thought about standing at home. But I always do at an event, and I think the reporters should have.
Next question, do you sing it (to the best of your ability) at public events?

out of respect of the country I refrain from singing. I know my limitations.

I don't stand at home, but take my hat off. Far as the press at the event, I think they should have stood up.
And singing, yes, loud and proud.

I think the press should have stood for the national anthem. Perhaps they hear it so often, they've become desensitized to it. I always stand and put my hand over my heart in public but do not in private. However, I cannot stop the tears publicly or privately. The meaning behind the song and my pride in our country brings me to tears every time. Excellent post.

I tear up every time I hear it too CompliantOkie. I stand at events but at home I stay sitting with my hand over my heart. Yes I sing but I sure don't do that song justice.

We stand when it is played at any venue we are at. As do our children & they always remove their caps if they are wearing them. The kids have even commented (sometimes too loudly) " Why doesn't that guy know to take his hat off?"
I agree with the statement above it is about respect - we always stand during ALL anthems US or not if we at the event. I think unless you are unable to then you should.

Oh and sometimes the kids stand when it plays on TV when we are home - the adults never do.

We always stand with our hands over our hearts at events, but not at home. I was always taught too that you don't mess with the musical version of the national anthem. It is to be sung the way it was written. My grandfather back in the day and even my mom now comments on how someone will sing it with their own flair rather than the way it was written, and that they've ruined it. I get their way of thinking, but I know that I have heard some pretty darn good versions where the artist singing added their own artistic license to the song.
