We're trying to settle a debate over here...is there a limit to the number of consecutive business days that a bank can be closed?

To my knowledge, banks are not allowed to be closed for more than 3 days in a row.

State Banking Law in Louisiana says a bank can't be closed for more than 3 consecutive business days. That would allow them to be closed as many as 4 calendar days.

I'd guess that it depends upon the regulations of the jurisdiction under which your charter was granted.

I do not believe there is any federal law or regulation that addresses it.

I asked this question a while ago also. It seems to vary by state.

I used to work for a National Bank in Colorado--we had to be closed for 4 days in a row (over MLK holiday weekend and following Tuesday) due to a blizzard. We had to call Fed to get "approval". This was in the late 80s or early 90s.

I am aware of no federal requirement. Many times this is brought up and the answers are either state laws prevail, or urban myths of "I was always told...". I haven't ever been given a cite if there is a national/federal requirement. The problem is, your cash letters and Reg. CC holds may not take the same holiday and you are still responsible.

Seems like in TN, you can close more than 3 days only if you notify TN Dept of Financial Institutions.
