HMDA - More than one race, did you have many?

Just curious if those of you scrubbing your data noticed many applicants who chose more than one race this year for HMDA?
I had 1 out of about 500. I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

S E, I agree with Don. If your applications aren't in compliance it could be big trouble. If the applications are correct but your software won't let you enter additional races, then you will have to keep track of them and manually add them to your LAR. Hopefully you are like the rest of us and had so few it wouldn't be an issue.

I'm glad to hear y'all didn't see many of these - I was a little worried when I saw our extremely low number.

Try telling that to our vendor. For some reason they think this is perfectly acceptable. I have been fighting with them for MONTHS about this (and several other HMDA related issues) but so far they have not budged. I have gone through all the proper management channels but haven't seen any results. I want to get a new vendor but it looks like it will be a cold day in hell...

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Someone Else is manually going through all of the applications for the year an checking to see if anyone marked more than one race. Or she is taking her chance that there aren't any.

We noticed 1 out of 1,200 reviewed in one department. Not sure about the rest.

As I visually scanned the 2004 LAR for possible errors. I pulled about five actual applications( files) (out of 300) that looked "weird". We see written applications where the applicant(s) will only complete selected GMI fields. The application phase closes and we never meet the applicant in person or talk to them until we call to say the loan is approved. So our LAR will indicate that some of the information is complete, but some was "not provided in mail, telephone, Internet application". For example, of the 5 that stand out on the LAR one reads "Ethnicity"- not provided in mail, telephone", etc. etc.), race-white, sex-male. Or they might read "Not Hispanic", race "Not provided in mail, telephone, etc. etc.) and sex-male and sex-female. I'm not sure if the applicants are trying to be funny or are legitimately missing the fields. But my lenders are trained NOT to do a visual at loan closing. It is too late anytime after the application phase closes. Does anyone else have some weird combinations of data?

My sense is that applicants are so used to checking only one box for "Race" that they didn't think to check more than one box, and they probably did not read the fine print above advising them of their right to check more than one box.
Just a guess, though.

We had none. However, I did notice that most Hispanics refuse to designate a race. We're not surprised. Is HUD?
Oh wait...I got my regs mixed up. I should've wrote, are the regulators surprised?

We worked with over 40 vendors last year to help them understand the HMDA multiple race issues... Let me approach it from my side. Send me a PRIVATE email at len@questsoft.com with the vendor's name. I used to design LOS systems so I can sometimes get through speaking their language. I should have an answer for you in 2-3 days.
